SMYSP is an intense 5-week Science and Medicine program that takes place on the Stanford campus. Students have opportunities to participate in writing seminars, anatomy and pathology laboratory workshops and hospital internships. Students will be paired with mentors (Stanford med student, Grad student or health care professional).

What does the Summer Residential Program provide students?
The Summer Residential Program bolsters student’s science skills while introducing them to a host of health-related careers. In order to be eligible, students must be able to attend the entire duration of the program seven days per week. Students live in a residence house on the Stanford campus for the entirety of the program, and family members are invited to visit each Sunday for a scheduled period of time. The program includes:
- Target student: Low-income, strong interest in science, medicine and health related careers
- Academically motivated with GPA 2.75 or higher
- Students live on the Stanford campus during the program
- Application Due: February 12, 2020
- The Stanford Medical Youth Science Program (SMYSP) will run from June 21- July 25th.
How to apply:
All applicants must complete a Preliminary Application, which allows the SMYSP to collect demographic and contact information for those interested in applying. Once the Preliminary Application is submitted, applicants will be able to access the Online Application. In addition to the Preliminary Application, a complete application consists of:
- A submitted Online Application.
- A copy of your school transcript (unofficial transcripts are acceptable). Allowed file types: PDF, JPG, TIF, GIF, and PNG. If you have multiple transcripts, combine them into a single file for upload, with your most recent transcript first.
- At least two Teacher Recommendations. On the Online Application, you will be able to request recommendations from two or more teachers qualified to comment on your performance and ability in the SMYSP content areas. You may submit more than two recommendation forms if you like. Required information: teacher’s full name, school name, subjects taught, email address, and phone number.
What does the Summer Residential Program provide students?
The Summer Residential Program bolsters student’s science skills while introducing them to a host of health-related careers. In order to be eligible, students must be able to attend the entire duration of the program seven days per week. Students live in a residence house on the Stanford campus for the entirety of the program, and family members are invited to visit each Sunday for a scheduled period of time. The program includes:
- a full scholarship;
- an intense and rewarding educational experience;
- staff members who work with each student’s innate talents to broaden understanding of the basic sciences, health and social sciences;
- an opportunity to attend lectures given by Stanford University professors, medical professionals and staff members;
- an opportunity to participate in writing seminars, and anatomy and pathology laboratory workshops;
- a hospital internship two days per week at the Stanford Health Care hospital;
- a mentor who is a Stanford medical student, graduate student, or science and health professional;
- opportunities to develop leadership skills to be effective leaders and role models in their schools and communities;
- opportunities to develop important friendships; living, eating, and working with other students for five weeks is a great way to get to know people really well.
